Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, AWIS DC Members and Friends!

The month of May commemorates the resilience and legacy, traditions, and culture of Asians, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders across the United States. As we get ready to spring into warmer weather, please see the below list of highlighted events through AWIS National and AWIS Chapters across the country. As many events are still virtual, we can continue to take advantage of the variety of events across the AWIS network and meet fellow community members.

 

Upcoming AWIS Local & National Events, Opportunities, & Resources:

  • Star Trek: Discovery – DC Special Advance Screening – Monday, April 29th Screening from Paramount – 10 tickets available! Last minute invitation – please email ASAP to have your name on the list by Monday 11am ET. Bring a friend or have a date night with your partner and enjoy Star Trek!

  • AWIS PHL: Birth of Justice Philly – Origins, Actions, and Future Paths (Wednesday, May 1st, from 6-7:30 PM EST) Dr. Aasta Mehta is the Medical Officer of Reproductive Health at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, where she leads the development and implementation of reproductive health policies and programs. Known for her practical approach to integrating medical practice with policy, she has contributed significantly to public health education and policymaking, particularly in reducing pregnancy related morbidity and mortality.   • AWIS St. Louis: Learn how to grow your personal brand on LinkedIn (Tuesday, May 14th, from 7-8:30 PM EST) In this session, you’ll learn how to maximize your profile, craft posts that showcase your expertise, and build a network you can utilize personally and professionally. You’ll even hear about a feature that only 5% of LinkedIn users are using that can set you apart, as well as how to use AI to help you stand out. Whatever your skill or comfort level on social media, this session can help you grow your personal brand. All genders are welcome. You don’t have to be an AWIS member to attend. Register here.

  • AWIS DC: STEAM Speaker Series with Andrea Plowright (Wednesday, May 15th, at 6PM EST) Andrea Plowright is a multidisciplinary trailblazer in aeronautics and cybersecurity. We hope you can join us for our live conversation on our Youtube page.

 

  • 2024 Techstravaganza at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Saturday, May 18th from 10am – 4pm EST): From hands-on activities to mind-blowing demonstrations, Techstravaganza inspires students to explore their passion for STEM. This FREE event is open to all and we encourage you to bring your little ones to explore the many booths and have fun learning the many areas of science! AWIS DC is running a DNA Extraction booth, and we hope to see you there!

  • AWIS National: Navigating Conflict and Collaboration in the Lab (Wednesday, May 29th, from 3-4PM EST) Working in a research lab can be both exhilarating and challenging. On one hand, there’s the thrill of scientific discovery, the satisfaction of contributing to groundbreaking research, and the opportunity to collaborate with brilliant minds in your field. Unfortunately, bullying and harassment can occur in research settings, posing significant challenges to the well-being and productivity of scientists, particularly women. Whether you’re a graduate student, postdoctoral researcher, or established professional, this webinar offers valuable insights and actionable strategies to enhance your success in the competitive world of STEM.   • AWIS DC: STEAM Speaker Series with Mary Hunt (Thursday, May 30th, at 6PM EST) Mary Hunt pioneered her career by blending her passion for art and science as a scientific illustrator. Her specialty includes illustrating paleontology resources, medical illustration exhibits and knitting scientifically accurate dinosaur patterns and skeletons.   • AWIS National: DEI Foundations – Building Your Leadership Engagement Strategy (Tuesday, June 11th, from 12-1PM EST) Do you currently have a leadership engagement strategy in place? What obstacles are you trying to overcome? Whether you’re just starting or looking to enhance your existing DEI program, this event is tailored to provide you with the foundation needed for success.   • AWIS National: Salaries, Negotiating, and Knowing Your Worth (Tuesday, June 18th, from 2-3PM EST) Money! It plays such an integral role in our lives today, but is often a source of stress and anxiety. Part of the challenge is we are taught not to discuss money or that money should be a secondary priority. In this webinar, Professional Speaker and STEM Career Coach Alaina G. Levine will engage in a frank conversation about money and power. We will address how to look at money as a tool, how to establish your worth, and how to approach money as it relates to career advancement, job searches, and salary negotiation. Why join AWIS National?
It’s easy and rewarding to join AWIS National. There are three membership categories: student ($35) , early career ($59), and full membership ($149). All membership categories receive the same benefits.

As of June 30, 2021, AWIS National established a new membership system that sends 25% of your national membership dues to the chapter chosen by the member. Therefore, there are no additional costs to join AWIS DC and all dues are collected through the AWIS National website.

Under the new system, members chose to join a local chapter when joining or renewing their AWIS National Membership. Please be sure to select the DC Chapter when you join or renew.
