Let’s get ready to rumble. The next AWIS DC talk is coming, Oct. 27!

Anyone who has been to a conference has heard the stories of people who have been harassed. In our next presentation, we will hear from Sherry Marts, a career and life coach, about what to do if it happens to you or your colleagues.

Attending and presenting at meetings and conferences is required for success in academic and research careers. Sexual and gender-based harassment erodes women’s confidence, undermines their professional success, and holds them back in their professions.

Meetings and conferences are a hybrid of two places where women commonly encounter harassment: in public places and the workplace. This interactive presentation will cover approaches suitable for addressing both types of harassment.
Material to be covered:

Who Harasses Whom, and Why: What constitutes harassment, why men harass women, how street harassment differs from workplace harassment

Effective Responses to Harassment: How to decide when to confront harassers, how to confront and stop harassers effectively without escalating the encounter, what works and what doesn’t work to stop harassment, how to intervene effectively as a witness or bystander. You will actively learn and practice responding in variety of harassment scenarios.

Anti-Harassment Policies: How societies, associations, and other meeting and conference organizers can address harassment, the components of effective anti-harassment policies, how (and whom) to approach to encourage organizations to adopt and enforce anti-harassment policies.
