Picture Day! Professional Headshot, Networking & Resume Exchange

AWIS DC presents:

Picture Day! Professional Headshot, Networking & Resume Exchange!

April 4, 2016

6-8:30pm

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Building,
1200 New York Avenue Northwest, Washington DC

At her talk with AWIS DC in December, personal branding expert, Jen Dalton, reminded us of the value of having a professional headshot to represent us in the digital world. As much as we like taking them, it seems that our selfie shots might not make the best 1st impression! We’re pleased to offer you an opportunity to have your business profile portrait taken by DC-area portrait photographer, Tamzin Smith. Tamzin is giving AWIS and AWIS friends a very special offer that includes 1 full-resolution, moderately-retouched digital file (selected from 3-5 shots)! Spaces are limited! ALL ARE WELCOME! Please RSVP by March 31st! Note: No refunds will be given for the headshot portion of this event after March 31, 2016.

Tickets: https://awisdcpictureday.eventbrite.com

Not a member! Join AWIS DC Here!

What to do while you wait for your personal photo shoot?

Photos will be taken on a first come, first served basis so polish off your resumes and bring ~5-10 copies to exchange with others for feedback and networking while you wait! Don’t forget your business cards!

Already have a professional headshot? Feel free to just join us for the Resume Exchange and networking!

Appetizers will be provided.

About Tamzin

Tamzin Smith is a 2013 honors graduate of the Washington School of Photography Professional Program, and an artist-in-residence at Washington ArtWorks in Rockville, Maryland. Tamzin specializes in contemporary, natural light portraits, in studio and on location, for business and branding, social media, online dating, and personal enjoyment. She brings to her work lessons learned from being on the other side of the camera as a model, a sense of composition and color from 23 years as a graphic designer and illustrator, and a sensitivity to the discomfort many people feel being photographed from 4 years of working largely with a professional female clientele. Examples of Tamzin’s work are attached and you can view more on her website at www.tamzinsmithphoto.com.

Tips for preparing for your portrait session:

  • Consider getting your makeup and hair professionally done—unless going for glamorous look, keep it natural.
  • If getting hair cut and/or colored, best to do it a week in advance–give it a chance to settle in and look natural, or if you don’t like it, you have time to make adjustments.
  • Do your hair and makeup carefully, and bring tools/products to touch up.
  • Pinterest is a great resource for wardrobe—search “what to wear for portrait,” maybe add “business,” “casual,” etc…
  • Wear something you love and feel great in, and/or that others have told you you look great in, and that flatters your figure and/or suits the intended use (business, social, dating, etc…).
  • Choose classic styles rather than trendy (unless fashion is your business and/or you are prepared to get an updated portrait when styles change).
  • Bring some options to accessorize (jacket or cardigan, scarves, jewelry, etc…).
  • Please make sure clothes are free of wrinkles, lint and/or pet hair.
  • If you wear glasses, bring them, clean them and be prepared to be photographed in them.
  • Get good sleep and hydration!
