Marts, Ph.D., President and CEO, S*Marts Consulting, LLC You’ve heard that “networking” is key to career advancement. So, you’ve gone to networking events, you’ve eaten the bad hors d’oeuvres and drunk the cheap wine, you’ve made some small talk and exchanged business cards with a few people, and you’re still waiting for it to pay off. Or, because you dread and detest all of the above, you’ve resigned yourself to missing out on this particular career advancement strategy. Here’s the well-kept secret: networking is a set of tools and techniques, and no one is born knowing how to do use them perfectly. And none of it is any harder to learn than all the things you already know how to do – although it does take practice. In this session, we’ll open up the toolbox and uncover ways to make networking easy, interesting, and fun. You’ll learn how to approach networking events with a plan and a strategy, how to start an interesting conversation with pretty much anyone, and how to follow up with new contacts without being a pest. You’ll have a chance to practice on each other, and you’ll set some straightforward goals and create a networking plan to achieve them. Get tickets at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ BIO: Sherry Marts is an executive and career coach who presents lively and interactive workshops (or, as she prefers to call them, “playdates”). Her specialty is working with women in science and academia who are considering a career change. In addition to “Networking for Introverts,” she has created a playdate called “Dance As If No One Were Watching” for those who are too shy to actually move to music in public. Learn more about her and her work at www.smartsconsulting.com. http://awisdcoctober.eventbrite.com Join our panelists for an evening of career exploration. Opportunities abound for scientists who choose not to stay in academia. Scientific societies, museums, and a seemingly infinite variety of publications and other media want your knowledge, expertise and skills. Learn more about how to steer your career into places where you’ll thrive. Panelists: Beth Ruedi is Director of Education and Professional Development for the Genetics Society of America. Briana Pobiner is a Research Scientist and Museum Educator with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Sara Reardon joined Nature in 2013 and writes about biomedical research and policy, with a focus on neuroscience, microbiology, and NIH. Moderator: Sherry Marts is the current VP for Programs for the AWIS DC Chapter. She is a coach and consultant with a particular interest in advancing women in STEM. AWIS-DC is excited to host an interactive evening with Jen Dalton, CEO of BrandMirror. Although you probably don’t think of your career as a business, advancing in your career often requires the skills of an expert in sales and marketing. You are that business’ brand, and learning how to make yourself stand out, to make your value visible, and to create a strategy for building and maintaining your presence in the job market is crucial to success. And the job market these days is increasingly online. Join DC AWIS to take a step back, assess what your online brand is, and how best to position yourself to move forward in your career. Jen Dalton, CEO of BrandMirror, will provide strategies and insights for you to better understand your unique value, and to communicate that clearly to your target audiences. You’ll learn how to ensure that your reputation in person and online is remarkable, and sets you up for new and exciting opportunities. Jen Dalton, CEO of BrandMirror, has over 15 years of experience in strategy, marketing and coaching. Jen helps people present their most compelling and powerful selves to the world, and she is an expert on making best use of social media tools while avoiding potential pitfalls.
